How to Write Razor Sharp Ads that Cut Through the Clutter

July 01, 20244 min read

If you are a business owner, then you have probably gone through the process of running advertisements before. Maybe you used Facebook’s ‘boost’ option (which is lame), or maybe you even wrestled with the Meta Ads Manager. Either way, you probably realized quickly that it is not an easy task. Especially because a lot of entrepreneurs don’t know what they are doing wrong, or why their ads aren’t performing like they thought they would.

One of the main aspects that business owners struggle with is effectively grabbing the attention of your target audience. It is easy to find yourself running ads that blend in with all of your competition, and with the thousands of other ads that people see on a daily basis. With social media, people are bombarded with advertisements 24/7, so it is more important than ever to ensure that your ads stand out among the crowd and grab your prospects' attention.

But how do you write ads that stand out and get noticed by your target audience?

It all starts with 2 key aspects that are a lot more simple than you might think.

Before I tell you what they are, let me describe a scenario to you so you can better understand it.

Picture yourself in a train station.

It is extremely busy, people whizzing by trying to catch their train, it’s a madhouse.

You see your friend in front of you, among the sea of people, and you need to get his attention.

Most people’s first thought is, call out their name!

If that person hears you, chances are, they are going to start looking around and paying attention to you.

You want to have the same thinking when you are writing ads.

When you are writing ads, you are trying to get the attention of a specific type of person, your target audience. So the best way to get their attention is probably by directly calling them out of the crowd. Obviously, you aren’t going to use their specific name, but whatever you say you need to make sure it applies to them and they notice it. This brings us to our first key aspect for you to consider.

Say something that makes the reader know that you understand them.

You need to make sure that when your prospect reads your headline, they think “Oh, what’s this? This applies to me” and they keep reading. For example, if you have a car detailing business, the one thing in common that all of your prospects have, is a dirty car. So you should probably say something like “Are you tired of your dirty car?”. Best to keep things simple because simplicity always wins.

This could be a good headline for a car detailing business, and their ads, but there is another aspect to consider which could make this blend in with the crowd. This is our second aspect.

Say something that is different from your competitors.

If all of your competitors are saying the exact same thing, then your ads are going to blend in better than a chameleon in the rainforest. Consider this. How many times have you been driving down the street and you look over just to see an ad for a real estate agent. It was probably just a picture of their face, with their name below. You probably looked at it for 1 second and realized that it was just another boring ad for a real estate agent, and it was no different from the other 10,000 ads that try to do the same thing.

If you want your ads to stand out among the sea of other ads on social media, then you need to make sure that you are saying or doing something different that your prospect hasn’t seen before. You also need to make sure that whatever you are saying to your target audience, makes them believe that you understand them, and you know what they are going through.

If you can manage to write messages in your ads that both say something that is different from your competitors, and make your prospect believe that you understand them, then your ads will stick out among the crowd like a sore thumb… in a good way.
